PART 2 -THE SCHOOLS ARE CHOSEN
- James Balcombe, coach to St. James
Montefiore CC, near Ditchling has the task of establishing a
coaching programme for 6 schools in the " catchment area
of the Club".
- After 20 hours of work- not covered
in terms of financing the project - James has established a link
with Dorothy Stringer Sports College, Brighton and, through Steve
Wignall, with Downlands School, Hassocks.
- Dorothy Stringer enter the Sussex Schools
inter School Under 12, under 13,Under 14,and Under 15 competitions.
- Downlands School, Hassocks enter the
Sussex Schools inter School Under 13,Under 14,and Under 15 competitions.
- Both schools therefore have some cricket
on their curriculum
- Downlands School won the Britannic
Assurance Schools Award worth £300 in 1995 for being the
most deserving cricketing Sussex Secondary School
- Other schools which may have come into James consideration
are -Oakmeeds School, Burgess Hill ; St. Paul's R.C. College
, Burgess Hill; Patcham High School, Brighton
- Together with the two Secondary Schools James is seeking
4 Primary Schools.
- Linked to the Dorothy Stringer James is considering , on
the advice of Andy Marchant, two schools to the east of the City-
BEVENDEAN and HARTFIELD
- Linked to Downlands School he is considering LONDON MEAD,
BURGESS HILL; BIRCHWOOD GROVE, BURGESS HILL and WINDMILLS, HASSOCKS
- Of the Primary Schools BIRCHWOOD GROVE - where James has
already coached- has a good reputation for playing both Hard
and Soft ball cricket .
- The school enter Sussex School competitions both boys and
girls.
- WINDMILLS SCHOOL, HASSOCKS was once a very strong cricketing
school in the 1970-1980 period when Pieter Dickson was the cricket
master. This success tied in very closely with the success of
the nearby Club Keymer and Hassocks.
- At one stage the school had five County players - John Price/Barry
Burt/Keith Price/Nigel Clifford and Martin Speight.
- James can also establish a link with an Independent School-
he is considering BURGESS HILL SCHOOL FOR GIRLS - where he already
has a coaching class.
