Women's cricket in Sussex had another fantastic season, both
at county and club level. The team spirit among all the age groups
and all the hard work the players put in was tremendous and it
showed with many of our players being picked to compete at a higher
level. Clare Connor, Mandie Godliman and Caroline Atkins represented
England during the summer against India and New Zealand, and our
very own overseas player Haidee Tiffen played for New Zealand.
Clare, Mandie and Haidee are playing at international level throughout
the winter in Australia and New Zealand, we wish them all success.
At England under 19 level Alexia Walker and Kate Oakenfold played
in the European cup held in Ireland in 2002 and over the winter
they were joined by Rosalie Birch to tour Australia.
Kate Oakenfold and Rosalie Birch joined the boys for the first
time in the ECB/Sussex academy where they improved on all aspects
of their game. Rosalie has been asked back to take part in the
academy for 2003.
The Sussex seniors enjoyed one of their best seasons in 2002. They were promoted to division one in the county championship the year before and in 2002 came third in the division winning some very tough matches.
Sussex under 19's reached the County championship final for the eighth year running, but were unfortunate to lose to their old rivals, Yorkshire.
Sussex under 17's had a very good season, coming third in league
of the county championship.
An under 15 side played at the Ampleforth and Lords Wandsworth
tournament and reached the final of the Ampleforth tournament
only losing to Kent by 8 wickets.
Sussex under 13's had an excellent season, they entered into a league for the first time and did well, improving as the season went on. The under 13's had the most success winning the Oundle eight-a-side tournament.
At club level Brighton & Hove L.C.C first team had another successful season, coming second in the south premier league, and winning the National cup, beating Wakefield in the final. Brighton's second team and Horsham had another good season in the third division.
The 2003 season looks very promising for Sussex. A trials day
was held for new players at the end of 2002 and there were over
30 players turned up, which is very exciting for Sussex. Also
there are now seven new clubs up and running in Sussex.
2003 sees the second year running for the super 4's competition,
where last season eight players from Sussex were picked to take
part. We wish all the players and the new clubs all the best for
the season.
Sussex W.C.A are always on the lookout for new players. If
you are aware of any promising cricketers then please contact
me, Charlotte Burton, Junior Organiser, Sussex W.C.A, at 20, The
Curlews, Shoreham-By-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5UQ.
