Cricket can be like
fishing - complete with memories of past successes
- The birth of Megan
Greenfield to parents, Keith Greenfield
( Sussex CCC coach ) and his wife Caroline will have delighted Caroline's parents Mr Mrs Maurice Burley.
- There are some people who can remember
the birth of Caroline and her proud parents bringing her to her first
cricket match!.
- Grand daughter Megan may well possibly hear of the many victorious
innings played by her grandfather whilst he was a member of Noel Bennett's X1
- a notorious bunch of semi-nomadic cricketers based in and around
Brighton.
- At the height of the Bennett's era
" grandfather Burley" did in fact make a particularly memorable
innings versus BattleCricket Club, the sight of the earlier competition involving
William and Harold in 1066.
- In an afternoon match Bennett's elected
to bat first and at 2pm the runs began to compile.
- By the tea interval Bennett's were able to declare with a score of over 350
runs and the masterful Maurice Burley had scored over 150 of them.
- Tea was served by Mrs
Holland and Battle went in to bat.
- At the end of the game over 700 runs
had been scored and Bennett's had LOST.
- As the player's changed under the gas
lights of the little wooden pavilion the future stories already
began to be composed in the minds of the participants.
- This was an era of the Sunday afternoon
Club cricket scene before the introduction of League cricket.
- Such a time will not now return,
but young Megan
wil surely hear of the match v Battle as she sits on her grandfather's
knee.
