• The birth of Megan Greenfield to parents, Keith Greenfield ( Sussex CCC coach ) and his wife Caroline will have delighted Caroline's parents Mr Mrs Maurice Burley.
• There are some people who can remember the birth of Caroline and her proud parents bringing her to her first cricket match!.
• Grand daughter Megan may well possibly hear of the many victorious innings played by her grandfather whilst he was a member of Noel Bennett's X1 - a notorious bunch of semi-nomadic cricketers based in and around Brighton.
• At the height of the Bennett's era " grandfather Burley" did in fact make a particularly memorable innings versus BattleCricket Club, the sight of the earlier competition involving William and Harold in 1066.
• In an afternoon match Bennett's elected to bat first and at 2pm the runs began to compile.
• By the tea interval Bennett's were able to declare with a score of over 350 runs and the masterful Maurice Burley had scored over 150 of them.
• Tea was served by Mrs Holland and Battle went in to bat.
• At the end of the game over 700 runs had been scored and Bennett's had LOST.
• As the player's changed under the gas lights of the little wooden pavilion the future stories already began to be composed in the minds of the participants.
• This was an era of the Sunday afternoon Club cricket scene before the introduction of League cricket.
• Such a time will not now return, but young Megan wil surely hear of the match v Battle as she sits on her grandfather's knee.
